Permanent houses for the shanty dwellers of Kompannaweediya

20.7.2008

The Government has already initiated a project to construct 1,000 houses at a cost of Rs. 1 million each for the shanty dwellers of Kompannaweediya and the work is due to be completed by the end of March next year.

Until then, families are requested to move to 'transit houses' in Mattakkuliya, Urban Development Authority Director General Prasanna Silva said. He added that the shanty dwellers had been informed of the demolition of their unauthorised constructions prior to the action taken by the UDA.

The Supreme Court on Friday issued an interim order on the eviction of residents and the demolition of their houses.
