COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Sanath Jayasuriya grabbed four wickets and scored 24 runs to guide Sri Lanka to a five-wicket win against Bangladesh in the second one- dayer and take an unbeatable 2-0 lead in the three-match series on Monday.
His haul of 4-31 made him the first player to record 10,000 career runs and 300 wickets in limited- overs internationals.
As a batsman Jayasuriya has scored more than 12,000 runs in 397 limited-over internationals averaging 32 runs per inning.
After Sri Lanka captain Mahela Jayawardene won the toss and elected to field in the morning, fast bowler Lasith Malinga sparked an early Bangladesh collapse with a devastating three-wicket opening spell that led to the visitors being dismissed for a paltry 137 runs.
In reply, Sri Lanka reached the target with 18.5 overs to spare.
"It's really tough to score 12,000 runs and take 300 wickets. It means a lot of hard work and sacrifice," Jayasuriya said of his milestone.
"Some times when I can't perform with the bat I am able to do something with the ball and this gives me a lot of confidence."
Asked whether he thinks his record can be broken, Jayasuriya said: "If someone works really hard and he is really lucky, he can do that."
Opener Upul Tharanga scored an aggressive 28 runs off 25 balls including six fours before being caught by wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim off fast bowler Shahadat Hossain .
Kumar Sangakkara (6) and Mahela Jayawardene (7) were dismissed cheaply while Jayasuriya faced 39 balls and hit four boundaries before being caught by Aftab Ahmed off left-arm seamer Syed Rasel for 24 runs.
Bangladesh appeared a better unit on the field and once had the hosts four down for 79. But middle order pair Chamara Silva (36) and Tillakaratne Dilshan (20 not out) shared a 57-run partnership for the fifth wicket to ensure victory.
Rasel bowled a tidy spell for Bangladesh and finished with 2-39.
Earlier, Malinga's opening burst had the visitors struggling at four down for 26 but Bangladesh captain Mohammad
Ashraful and Ahmed steadied the innings with a 61-run fifth-wicket partnership, the highlight of an otherwise dismal batting display.
Opening batsman Shariar Nafees attempted to steer a Malinga delivery on the offside but only managed an edge to Jayawardene at slip.
Two overs later, Malinga bowled a fast yorker to Tamim Iqbal , who was beaten and bowled for three.
Rahim , promoted in the batting order, was dismissed for a duck trying to defend a rising delivery from Malinga , but wicketkeeper Sangakkara took a diving catch off the edge.
Silva dropped both Ahmed and Ashraful , but Jayasuriya broke the partnership when it started to look threatening and spurred another collapse that saw Bangladesh bowled dismissed in the 47th over.
Ahmed was the top Bangladesh scorer with 47 runs from 85 balls including two boundaries. Ashraful made 29.
Jayasuriya reached his 300-wicket milestone when he had tailender Rasel caught by Jehan Mubarak at mid-off to wrap up the Bangladesh innings.
As a batsman Jayasuriya has scored more than 12,000 runs in 397 limited-over internationals averaging 32 runs per inning.
Malinga finished with second best bowling figures 3-22 off nine overs .
Sri Lanka won the first limited- overs match last Friday and the third and final limited- overs series will be played Wednesday at the same venue.
The match will have little bearing on the series which the hosts have already secured. AP |
