Hon. Mangala Samaraweera MP,

Leader SLFP (M)
175, Castle Street,
Colombo 08

My Dear Mangala,

Please accept my sincere congratulations and best wishes for the success of the newly formed Alliance.

The stated objectives of the Alliance seem to reflect the essential need of the hour. I have believed for a long time that the country's problems can be solved effectively, only through a Grand Alliance of all honest, patriotic forces.

My Government of 1994 succeeded to a great extent in bringing into Government or to support the Government, all Parties representing the minority groups, and all major Parties, except the UNP and the JVP, I made continued efforts to bring the UNP too, to work with us, So I am very glad to see that the UNP and an important section of the SLFP, have agreed to work together in a formally constituted Alliance.

My Party, the SLFP has recently changed several important policies which we followed since 1993 – policies which permitted us to lead our country to great, new heights. New policies have been adopted without free discussion or dialogue, with agreement being obtained through the use of intimidatory methods.

This is a style, wholly alien to the SLFP.

I honestly believe that the strange new policies that are being implemented today, with regard to the Economy, the Tamil Question and rampant Corruption will not resolve the prevailing problems in any of these spheres and may even worsen the situation to a point of no return.

The SLFP is a Party that is deeply committed to democratic governance within the party and in the country. It has played a brave and crucial role in protecting Democracy and Individual Freedom in the face of grave challenges and extraordinary sacrifices made by our Leaders and members.

Permit me to salute all those who have come forward, despite the many personal dangers they face, to safeguard and take forward the hallowed policies of our great and noble party. I'm certain that the SLFP will remain united and resolute in the struggle to protect its integrity, traditions and its noble spirit.

I'm equally certain, that you have the full blessings of the two Great Leaders who led our Party to greatness and our country to progress, in the daunting task you have undertaken.

May the Triple Gem and all the Gods above shower my beloved land with all their blessings, so that we may emerge once more from darkness unto light.

With Best Wishes,

You're Sincerely
Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga
