St. George Cricket
Club's finals aspirations have suffered a major setback
following Marvan Atapattu's decision to withdraw from the
remainder of the Sydney grade season.
The
former Sri Lankan captain played just the one game for the
club, scoring an unbeaten 35, and was due to return to Australia
after spending Christmas in his homeland.
But
in a statement sent to the club, Atapattu said his existing
playing contracts in England and India, combined with TV
work in India, were behind his decision.
"Considering
these prior contracts you will understand that I am unable
to provide St George District Cricket Club with my fullest
commitments for the rest of their season," he said.
"The
program would not have been workable." St George spokesman
Jon Jobson said while Atapattu's decision was untimely the
club would move on.
"It
is obviously disappointing as he showed his class in the
game before Christmas," he said. Kingsgrove Sports
managing director Harry Solomons who helped negotiate the
signing of Atapattu and echoed the mood within the club."It
is very disappointing Marvan has had to pull out,"
he said.
