Army claims 16 terrorists killed yesterday's clashes in North

Military reports from Northern defences indicate that 16 terrorists and three soldiers were killed in yesterday's clashes at Jaffna and Wanni Forward Defence Lines (FDLs).

In the Wanni theatre of battle, troops deployed in the Mullikulama area on the Vavuniya front launched a limited offensive at the terrorists' defences last morning (January 6). According to the defence sources, troops were able to capture three LTTE bunkers by 12.30, last afternoon. The terrorists too had given a stiff resistance to the security forces advance using small arms and mortars. Ground sources have confirmed three terrorists were killed and many others were injured in the incident. Also, one soldier was killed and eight others sustained injuries. The injured were evacuated to Anuradhapura military hospital. Troops during the subsequent search uncovered two claymore mines and 100 rounds used for heavy machine guns.

At Periyapantrichurichan, on the same front, army snipers deployed in the defence shot down three terrorists around 1.20.p.m.

On the Mannar front, troops confronted with LTTE terrorists in the Parappakandal area around 10.45, last morning. Ground troops have confirmed that at least 3-4 terrorists were killed in the incident. One terrorist body was observed lying at the location. No casualties to own troops in this incident.

Later , another confrontation took place between LTTE cadres and troops in the Parappakandal area around 5.30, last evening. Ground troops have confirmed that two terrorists were killed in this incident.

At Narikkulama, on the same Mannar front, ground sources said that one terrorist was killed by the snipers deployed on the defence around 3.25.p.m.

Separately at the Jaffna defence, it was reported that 6 terrorists and two soldiers were killed in yesterday's clashes.

Limited offensives are being continued.
