Suspect arrested on charges of smuggling fuel for LTTE - Tamil Nadu

An alleged agent of the internationally banned terrorist outfit LTTE, was arrested by Tamil Nadu Police on Friday (04) and remanded under judicial custody for 15 days yesterday (05), Indian news sources say.

The LTTE agent was arrested under charges for attempted murder and smuggling of essential commodities to the banned terrorist organisation, LTTE in Sri Lanka.

The suspect was arrested after a fight with a Tamil Nadu policeman.

Mahendran, a native of Sivaganga District, was walking along the seashore with two cans of diesel when Sub-Inspector Ravi followed him on suspicion on Friday night, Times of India reported citing Tamil Nadu police sources.

Sensing trouble, Mahendran pulled out a sword and tried to attack the SI, who however, escaped unhurt, overpowered him and seized the sword and the diesel cans, they said.

According to initial investigations, Mahendran was an LTTE agent smuggling essential commodities for the LTTE, Tamil Nadu Police has reported.

The Tamil Nadu police, has stepped up vigil in coastal districts of the state in view of reports about smuggling of fuel and essential commodities for the internationally banned terrorist outfit.
