The Election Department will receive nominations from political
parties and independent groups for local government polls
in the Eastern Province from January 18-25. Already Tamil
political parties excluding the LTTE-backed Tamil National
Alliance have come together to field candidates under a
common party symbol. Accordingly the EPDP, TMVP and EPRLF
(Vartharajah Faction) are said to be finalising candidates'
lists for 8 local bodies including the Batticaloa Municipal
Council.
Meanwhile the TNA has filed suit in the Supreme Court seeking
a postponement of the election claiming that the prevailing
climate was not conducive to conducting a free and fair
election. Political commentators point out however that
the conditions that prevailed when the same party contested
the 2004 General Election were even worse and therefore
this objection has no moral justification.
