11 terrorists, 02 soldiers killed in clashes ahead of Wanni and Northern defences

At least eleven terrorists were killed and many injured in clashes erupted yesterday (17) at Wanni and Northern defences, security sources said. Two soldiers also laid their lives during the brisk confrontations, as troops advanced into non-liberated territory, ahead of LTTE defences.

In Jaffna, troops while conducting a search operation yesterday (January 17) in genera area Irupalai, came under an LTTE fire. Troops retaliated effectively and neutralized the LTTE attack. According to troops, a slain LTTE body with gunshot wounds was recovered in subsequent search operations conducted. Military said,  the terrorist had chewed a cyanide capsule and committed suicide. Troops have also recovered following items during the search operation around 11.45.a.m.

Meanwhile, troops conducting search operations at Vilathikulama, Vavuniya, removed 68 anti-personnel (AP) mines, yesterday (17), at 8.30.am, security sources said.

In confrontations erupted between troops and LTTE at general area Pullippankiyarkulama, a terrorist was killed while, four other terrorists were reported killed or seriously wounded in clashes at Periyapandisurichchan, around 10.35.am. No damages were caused to own troops, security sources said.

Separately, four soldiers were reported wounded when an IED exploded during a search operation by security forces at general area Periyapanditrichchan, sources added.

Meanwhile, two soldiers were killed and similar numbers injured in three separate confrontations with LTTE ahead of Palaikkuli defences in Mannar front, Wanni sources said. Two LTTE terrorists were also reported killed in clashes yesterday (17) ahead of the Palaikkuli, LTTE defences, sources said.

Later, around 6.10.p.m, troops repulsed an LTTE offensive attempt at general area Chettikulama, Mannar killing at least 07 terrorists, security sources said.

In search operations conducted at general area South of Meeyankolla, Thoppigala, troops recovered 398 x anti personnel (AP) mines with fuses and 03 x claymore mines, sources report.
