Clashes continue in the North; 17 terrorists killed in yesterday's clashes

Military reports from the Northern battlefronts indicate that army has inflicted considerable losses upon the terrorists during yesterday's (January 16) clashes.

In the Jaffna theatre, army infantrymen deployed along the Kilaly front confronted with a group of terrorists around 11.45, last night. Ground troops confirmed that 02 terrorists were killed in the incident.

Meanwhile, snipers deployed on the Kilaly defence line claimed that one more terrorist was shot down around 3.40.p.m. On the Muhamalai front, another terrorist was reported killed by the snipers around 2.30.p.m

In the Wanni theatre of battle, Sri Lanka army continued its multi pronged attack at the terrorists' defence in the Vavuniya, Mannar, and Welioya battle fronts, right throughout the day.

At Pallaikuli troops destroyed a strong fortified defence line of the LTTE terrorists around 8.30.a.m. Following the attack troops consolidated their positions in the newly dominated territory. LTTE radio transmissions have revealed that 5 terrorists were killed and 4 wounded in the incident. During the subsequent search troops found one T-56 riffle. Two soldiers suffered serious injuries in the incident and were admitted to Vavuniya hospital.

Separately in the Manthai area troops, advanced further northwards along the Thiruketheeishwarn- Adampan road last morning giving heavy beating on the terrorists. Three soldiers suffered injuries in the incident. Ground troops confirmed that a large number of LTTE cadres were either killed or injured in the attack. Troops consolidated their positions in the area.

On the Vavuniaya front, troops engaged a terrorists bunker located in the Metpuliyankulam area around 6.30, last morning. Ground troops confirmed the bunker was destroyed and four terrorists were killed in the incident.

In the general Vilathikulama, troops claimed that one more terrorist killed by the snipers around 11.a.m.

On the Mannar front, troops attacked and destroyed one LTTE bunker in the Adampan area around 11.45.a.m. One terrorist was reportedly killed in the incident.

On the Walioya front, army engaged artillery at a terrorists' camp located at Kokkutoduvai last evening. LTTE's radio transmissions have revealed that two terrorists were killed and five injured in the attack.

Limited operations are continuing.
