LTTE receives heavy beating in Wanni and Northern fronts: 27 killed, 23 wounded

At least 27 LTTE terrorists were killed and over 23 injured as advancing troops moved further into LTTE dominated areas in Muhamalai, Vavuniya, Mannar and Welioya on Thursday (February 7) security sources said.

According to reports received, six other terrorists were believed killed or seriously wounded in confrontations with SLA troops ahead of the Wanni defence lines.

In the Jaffna front, troops confirmed killing two terrorists and injuring three others when SLA engaged small arms and rocket propelled grenade attacks targeting a group of terrorists ahead of the Muhamalai LTTE defences yesterday at 12.30.p.m.

Pitched fighting erupted between LTTE and troops at the Nagarkovil FDLs, where LTTE elements were driven off the terrorist trench lines with soaring casualties, sources said. During the attack at 5.a.m., a soldier laid his life while five other soldiers were reported wounded, military sources said.

Meanwhile, in the Vavuniya front at general area Northwest of Umayaratuwarankulama, troops ambushed an LTTE ground movement killing ten terrorists. No casualties were caused to own troops, security sources confirmed. In subsequent search operations conducted troops have recovered a T-56 assault riffle, according to reports.

Separately, in general area Mullikulama troops have defused 40 anti-personnel mines, Wanni military sources said.

Troops forced into LTTE defences in general area Periyapantrichurichchan, yesterday (7), attacked two terrorist bunker defences killing six terrorists and injuring ten others, Army sources said. In the confrontation at 3.20.p.m, with LTTE five soldiers were also injured military reported.

Meanwhile, SLA troops observing a retreating LTTE movement at Vilathikulama, laid an ambush killing two terrorists security sources said. Three soldiers were injured earlier when the LTTE group launched mortar attack at troops at 4.40.p.m.

In the Mannar front, five terrorists were reported killed sniped by SLA at Sirukulama, Nedunkandal and Parappakandal general areas, according to military reports. Meanwhile, troops on search and clearing operations at general area Kondampiddi, yesterday morning found following items.

In confrontation erupted between LTTE and troops at Welioya defences, a soldier was reported injured following an AP mine explosion, at Kokkuthuduval around 3.30.p.m. At general area Andankulama, troops attacked an LTTE bunker defence and confirmed that six terrorists were either killed or seriously wounded. According to security forces, no damages were caused to own troops in the clashes erupted at 5.p.m.

Meanwhile, troops confronted with a group of terrorists in general area Janakapura in Welioya yesterday. SLA sources said that a soldiers was killed during the confrontation while several others who suffered injuries were evacuated to general hospital at Padaviya. Troops also confirmed to have killed two terrorists while ten others were believed injured, military reports stated citing ground sources.
