Japan Denies Reports of Aid Reconsideration
1.2.2008

Japan shot down reports in certain media that it was planning to reconsider aid to Sri Lanka. Ambassador Akashi, the Japanese peace envoy insisted that the aid policy remained unchanged, according to a media release issued by the Foreign Ministry today (February 1).  Speaking with Foreign Secretary, Dr. Palitha Kohona, Akashi had stated that Japan was very encouraged by the APRC proposals and was in fact looking forward to further developments.
Mr. Akashi further said that he remained convinced of the assurances given by the President with regard to Sri Lanka's approach to the Peace Process. He dismissed the reports in some newspapers as a misrepresentation of what he said at a press conference.
