Saudi Govt. pledges support for Rizana’s release

Prince Khaled Bin Sultan, Deputy Minister of Defense has agreed to mediate to get Rizana Nafeek released from her death sentence. Rizana was convicted of killing a Saudi baby under her care and was sentenced to death by a court in Dawadmi on June 16th, 2007.

The Saudi Deputy Minister has made this pledge when he met Sri Lanka’s Foreign Minister Rohitha Bogollagama in Singapore when the two ministers visited ‘Singapore Airshow 2008.’

Rizana, who was below the eligible working age when she arrived in the Saudi Arabia to work as a maid, had her birth date on her passport falsified by the recruiting agent.

Prince Khaled assured Minister Bogollagama of the Saudi government's support and indicated that he would get Saudi authorities to persuade the victim's family to offer clemency. However, the matter of granting clemency ultimately lay with the victim's family he added
