Anandasangaree considering seriously the governorship offer

15.2.2008

The President of the Tamil United Liberation Front speaking from his Party Office in Colombo told that he is seriously considering the offer of Northern Province Governorship.

Speaking to Asian Tribune, the veteran politician V. Anandasangaree said that the offer by Sri Lanka President Mahinda Rajapakse is a very important issue. I am seriously considering about it. He said he is in the process of discussing with his friends, party leaders and others regarding this offer.

Earlier Supreme Court of Sri Lanka on 16 September 2006 ruled that the 1987 order by the then President of Sri Lanka merging the two provinces was not in keeping with the country's constitution and should therefore be separate provinces.

Accordingly, North and East became two separate provincial entities since 01 January 2007. Subsequently, Government nominated Rear Admiral Mohan Wijewickrema, as the Governor of Eastern Provincial Council, while North Governorship continues to remain vacant and Eastern Province Governor has been appointed as the acting Governor of the Northern Province.

Also the even after demerging the North and East provinces, Northern Provincial Council Office continues remain in Trincomalee.

Anandasangaree said when the North and East Provincial Councils were demerged, Sri Lanka President offered the Governorship to him.

While speaking to Asian Tribune, he said that he was offered the Governorship again on January 22, after APRC Chairman Tissa Vitarana submitted his proposals that included the establishment of an interim Council for the North.”

Anandasangaree who just returned from London after spending two weeks there said that he had the opportunity to speak with a cross section of the Tamil diaspora, as well as with his TULF party members regarding the offer made by Sri Lanka President. He said that he had a mixed reaction over there. However he said that he continues to discuss with his friendly party leaders as well as with those interested in the Tamils welfare.

It is expected Anandasangaree would convey his decision regarding the offer soon to President Mahinda Rajapakse before the government constitute the proposed Interim Council for the North.
