Military reports received from the Northern battlefronts
indicate that the troops engaged in limited offensives
against LTTE terrorists had achieved considerable success
during yesterday's (February 12) battles. At least 27
terrorist killed and 11 others suffered injuries in clashes
erupted in Muhamalai, Vavuniya, Mannar and Welioya battlefronts.
Also, 6 soldiers were killed and 18 others sustained injuries
during these confrontations.
On
the Jaffna theatre of battle, troops engaged LTTE bunker
defences in the Muhamalai area around 5, last morning.
Troops claimed that 7 LTTE bunkers were destroyed in that
attack. One soldier sustained injuries and admitted to
Palaley military hospital.
Separately,
army snipers deployed in the same front claimed that one
terrorist was shot down around 11.a.m.
In
Wanni theatre of battle, troops conducting limited offensives
in the Vavuniya front claimed that 17 terrorists killed
in confrontations erupted in the Koilmoddai, Umayartuvarankulama,
Alakallapottakulama Mullikulama and Periyapantrichurichchan
areas within the course of day. One body of an LTTE cadre
along with a T-56 riffle was found following the confrontation
took place at Periyapantrichurichchan.
Meanwhile,
4 soldiers suffered injuries due to a trapped mine explosion
at Mullikulama last afternoon. In addition, Troops engaged
in search operations in the Koilmoddai and Periyathampanai
areas found 119 anti personnel mines and 8 land mines.
On
the Mannar front, troops attacked a group of terrorists
detected at Sirukulama around 8.30 last morning. Ground
troops confirmed that 5 terrorists were either killed
or wounded in the confrontation.
Also,
6 soldiers were killed and 10 others suffered injuries
when LTTE terrorists engaged artillery at St. Sebastian
church at Thalladi, Mannar on the same day morning.
On
the Welioya front, troops had several clashed with the
LTTE terrorists Kokkuthuduvai, and Andankulama areas yesterday
and claimed 7 terrorists were killed and 6 wounded. 2
soldiers sustained injuries during these battles. Also,
one soldier suffered injuries in LTTE mortar fire in the
Kiriibbanwewa last night.
At
Kadduttaddamalai troops found 300 anti personnel mines
on the same day morning while clearing a captured LTTE
bunker.
