Sripathi Suriyaarachchi died in a road accident today
(09) around 1.15 PM at Thambuththegama, Galgamuwa. Two
bodyguards and another person who was in the vehicle were
also killed in the accident.

Suriyaarachchi died after admitting to Thambuththegama
hospital following the vehicle he was travelling from
Anuradhapura collided with a roadside tree near Medagama,
Galgamuwa.
Upon
hearing of the fatal accident, Deputy Health Minister
Jayaratne Herath, Nation Building Minister S.M. Chandrasena,
Deputy Sports Minister Bandula Basnayake and Provincial
Councilor Duminda Dissanayake visited the hospital.
The
driver of the vehicle, Priyantha Samarasinghe and a close
friend of the MP, S.K.R. Silva (Chief Executive Officer
of Isura FM), died on the spot.
Two
others injured in the accident - Ministerial Security
Division personnel identified as Somaratne and Nihal -
were admitted to the Thambutegama Hospital.
Somaratne, who was in critical condition, was later transferred
to the Anuradhapura General Hospital, where he died.
Suriyaarachchi's
death coincided with the first anniversary of his removal
from the portfolio.
Suriyaarachchi
was taken into custody by CID and remanded after he was
removed from the portfolio. Later he was released by court
and charges were framed against him in relation with a
murder in Polonnaruwa during the past election campaign.
Suriyaarachchi
exposed the ill-famous Mig aircraft deal both in an out
of the parliament and urged to appoint a parliamentary
select committee to probe it. Suriayaarachchi, the Chief
Coordinator of Sri Lanka Freedom Party People's Wing,
is a father of two children.
