Warwickshire have announced they have signed Sri Lanka Test hero Kumar Sangakkara, subject to a medical. The left-handed wicketkeeper-batsman will join the Bears after the World Cup and is expected to stay at Edgbaston for the rest of the summer.

Sangakkara, 29, replaces Australian Martin Love, who was forced to withdraw from his contract for the 2007 County Championship season as he requires a knee operation. Warwickshire director of coaching Mark Greatbatch said: "We are delighted to have secured one of the top players in the world so quickly after Martin Love's injury.

"Kumar Sangakkara has had an outstanding 12 months and is ranked in the top 10 batsmen in the world in both forms of international cricket. "He is looking forward to taking that sort of form into our domestic season." Meanwhile, Greatbatch has confirmed that Dale Steyn has agreed terms and will sign on at Edgbaston if he also comes through a medical.

The South African pace bowler will be available from the start of the season until June 3, when his countryman Paul Harris, the left-arm spinner, will take over the overseas berth.
