Kumara Sangakkara scored a fine century as Sri Lanka edged past India by five runs in the second one-day international to take a 1-0 lead in the four-match series here Sunday.

Sri Lanka, asked to bat after Rahul Dravid won the toss, scored 257 for eight wickets in 50 overs . In reply, India, despite half centuries from Sachin Tendulkar and Sourav Ganguly and a 48 from Mahendra Singh Dhoni , managed 252 for nine in 50 overs .

Wicketkeeper Sangakkara scored an elegant 110 (127 balls, 11x4s, 4x6s ) to star in Sri Lanka 's win at the Madhavrao Scindia ground.

Tillekaratne Dilshan scored 56 (65 balls, 7x4s) and pacer Ferveez Maharoof took three wickets to shine for the winners.

For India, Munaf Patel took four wickets and Ganguly (62, 79 balls, 6x4s, 1x4) and Tendulkar (54, 61 balls, 9x4s) batted well, but these efforts went in vain. Tendulkar got a reprieve early in his innings.

This match was crucial for some players on both sides.

Sehwag and Munaf were supposedly on 'trial' as the World Cup squad would be announced Monday.

While the lanky Gujarat pacer seemed to have passed the test, Sehwag , playing his first match since the tour of South Africa, failed again.

Rain had washed out the first match in Kolkata .

The series is now effectively of three matches.
