The
person taken into custody by the Cinnamon Gardens police
for assaulting the News Director of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini
Corporation in the company of Minister Mervyn Silva has
now been identified as a suspect in a double murder case
who had recently been released on bail.
The suspect, in plain
clothes with a tinted hair style, is now identified as
Nuwan alias “Kudu Nuwan,” a close ally of
“Kudu Lal” who was earlier convicted on narcotics
charges and is a close associate of Minister Mervyn Silva.
According to the Wellampitiya
police the suspect is a resident of Silva Mawatha in Meethotamulla
who was remanded as a suspect in a double murder case
several months ago and released on bail a few weeks ago.
He is alleged to be involved
in underworld activities and robberies and had reportedly
once shot at the police during a confrontation.
The suspect is currently
being detained at the National Hospital for treatment
under police custody.
He
was assaulted by enraged crowds and staff members of the
SLRC, who surrounded Minister Silva and his henchmen who
had stormed the place last morning to assault its News
Director.
