28.12.2007

The person taken into custody by the Cinnamon Gardens police for assaulting the News Director of the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation in the company of Minister Mervyn Silva has now been identified as a suspect in a double murder case who had recently been released on bail.

The suspect, in plain clothes with a tinted hair style, is now identified as Nuwan alias “Kudu Nuwan,” a close ally of “Kudu Lal” who was earlier convicted on narcotics charges and is a close associate of Minister Mervyn Silva.

According to the Wellampitiya police the suspect is a resident of Silva Mawatha in Meethotamulla who was remanded as a suspect in a double murder case several months ago and released on bail a few weeks ago.

He is alleged to be involved in underworld activities and robberies and had reportedly once shot at the police during a confrontation.

The suspect is currently being detained at the National Hospital for treatment under police custody.

He was assaulted by enraged crowds and staff members of the SLRC, who surrounded Minister Silva and his henchmen who had stormed the place last morning to assault its News Director.
