Veteran actor Ashoka Peiris passed away on the 24th following a heart attack.

Asoka was 65 years at the time of his death. He was a past student of St. Thomas’ College, Mt. Lavinia. He was an actor with a style of his own who adorned the silver screen, the small screen and the stage.
He made his debut in 1965 playing a main role in the drama ‘Palá Malla’. He followed with a role in an English drama directed by Lucian de Soyza. In the world of films he made his appearance in one of Dr. Lester James Pieris’ films ‘Delovak Athara.’

His first lead role was in Roy de Silva’s film ‘Thana Girav’. His remarkable performances were seen in Dr. Lester James Pieris’ ‘Uganathaya’, and ‘Baddegama’, Sumithra’s film ‘Yahalu- Yeheli’, D.B. Warnasiri’s ‘Sathyagrahanaya’, Tissa Abeysekara’s ‘Viragaya’, Wijaya Dharma-Sri’s ‘Guru- Gedara’, more recently in Wasantha Obeysekara’s ‘Máruthaya’ and ‘Yaksha-Weshaya’ and foreign films ‘Shadow of the Cobra’ and ‘Death Stone’.

Asoka made his entry in to tele-drams through Tissa Abesekara’s ‘Bicycale’ and held the audience spell bound by his performance in ‘Amba-Yahaluwo’ and ‘Irata Handana Mal’

Asoka was a creative and talented actor who led a quiet life but a large hearted human being.

Funeral will take place in Moratuwa Emmanuwel Church Cemetery on Friday (28) at 3.pm.
