Minister
of Health Care and Nutrition, Nimal Siripala de Silva has
directed that doctors who serve in the North and East would
be given preference in selections for foreign scholarships
from next year. Female doctors would be given prominence
under this scheme.
The scholarships, handled by the Planning Division of
the Ministry so far now require the signatures of the
Minister and the Secretary to the Ministry. According
to the Ministry Scholarships are awarded by INGOs and
NGOs such as UN, UNICEF, UNDP and WHO.
This scheme would help eliminate the factors of 'influence'
and 'connections' in determining the scholarships, the
minister said. Doctors who serve in other areas as Hambanthota,
Monaragala and similar difficult areas will also get special
consideration.
