Both government and the UNP lose in the budget fray – JVP
17.12.2007

JVP leader Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe says that the government narrowly escaped defeat in the vote vote at the third reading of the budget and the United National Party suffered a bitter loss.

JVP leader expressed these views at a media briefing held in Colombo yesterday. In further comments Mr. Amarasinghe said that this is a red notice to the government. JVP leader also pointed out that United National Party has proved to be an impotent party with no strategies and they have been reduced to signing petitions and distributing leaflets in fairs.

He said the budget presented is not a progressive one and instead oppresses the people, but a state of anarchy in the country at this moment is not conducive for the battle against terrorism.

"We wanted to unmask the bogus politicians who are bent on wrong doing. From the vote at the second reading of the budget patriots and traitors had been classified by a dividing line. Those who elevated opportunists as patriots have had to rub their mouths on a stone." Mr. Somawansa Amarasinghe said.

Addressing mediamen JVP General Secretary Mr. Tilvin Silva said that JVP took three decisions in this budget. He said JVP voted against the budget, then voted for the defence spending and finally abstained from voting. In all these decisions all 37 MP's of the party stood together and thereby uncovered the true face of all political parties to the country.

Responding to a question raised by a mediaman, Mr. Tilvin Silva said that the present government is protected by the United National Party. He emphasized that the UNP is therefore responsible for all malpractices of the present government. Mr.Tilvinsilva pointed out that there are 24 UNP parliamentarians within the government.
