Fighting continues; 46 terrorists killed in yesterday's clashes

Military reports received from the battlefronts in Wanni and Jaffna indicate 46 deaths to the LTTE , 40 casualties and 11 more as were either killed or wounded. During these clashes, 9 soldiers were killed and 18 others suffered injuries, reports further reveal.

On the Vavuniya- Mannar combined warfront troops operating under Army 57 division clashed with a group of terrorists detected in the Kalvilan area, South of Tunukkai last morning. Troops claimed 4 terrorists were killed in this incident. In a separate confrontation occurred in the Vavunikulama area around 12 noon a soldier suffered injuries due to terror small arms fire.

Troops of Task Force 2 operating in the right flank of the combined Vavuniya- Mannar front confronted with a group of terrorists in the Palamoddai area around 2.15 PM and claimed one terrorist was killed and 2 others wounded. Also, 3 soldiers suffered injuries due to anti personnel mine (AP) explosions occurred in the same area later in the evening.

Meanwhile, troops of 56 division operating separately from the main warfronts in either sides of the Jaffna-Kandy (A-9) road, attacked an LTTE bunker located in the Navatkulama area around 11.10 AM . Ground troops confirmed one terrorist was killed.

Troops of 61 division engaged in the clearing operations in Suppandaiyapuliyankulam area found one T-56 weapon.

Troops of Task Force 1 marching Northwards of the Vellankulama along the Mannar-Pooneryn (A-32) road had a series of clashes in the North of Vellankulama during the course of the day.

Around 9.40 AM , troops attacked a terror stronghold located North of Vellankulama in the Kilinochchi district. Troops claimed 9 terrorists were killed and 7 others were injured. LTTE fired heavy barrages of artillery and mortar fire at advancing soldiers. Two soldiers laid down their lives in the terror retaliation.

In a separate incident occurred around 4.30 PM , LTTE launched an attack at troops advancing into the Kilinochchi district along A-32 road . Troops overpowered the terror assault with the assistance of artillery support. Monitored radio transmission among LTTE units confirmed that 13 terrorists were killed in this incident. 4 soldiers suffered injuries.

Meanwhile, Task Force 1 soldiers attacked a well fortified LTTE camp located in the North of Vellankulama area around 11.30 AM on the same day. Monitored radio transmission confirmed that 5 terrorists were killed and 6 others wounded. Around 6.15 in the same evening LTTE made an abortive attempt to stop advancing troops at the same location. Troops successfully repulsed the attack. Monitored radio transmission confirmed 9 terrorists were killed and 14 others wounded. Also, one soldier was killed one reported missing and 4 others suffered injuries.

A soldier suffered injuries due to an AP mine explosion occurred in the North of Vellankulama around 5 PM.

On the Welioya front , troops of 59 division continued their march in the Mullaittivu forest fighting daylong battles with terrorist in the North of Janakapura , and North Kiriibanwewa areas. Troops claimed 4 terrorists were killed , 10 others wounded and 11 more were either killed or wounded during these clashes. One soldier was killed , one injured during a clash ensued in the North of Kiriibbanwewa area around 9.30 AM. Also , a soldier suffered injuries due to AP mine explosion occurred in the same area around 11.30 AM.

Meanwhile troops engaged on the clearing operations in the area 102 AP mines and 2 IED (Improvised Explosive Devises) during the day's operations. Troops captured 4 trench defences abandoned by the terrorists and found 350 live ammo used for T-56 weapons, field dressings and AP mines.

In the Jaffna theatre of operation , 3 soldiers were killed and 2 suffered wounds due to an hand grenade explosion occurred in the Thanankilappu area around 2.15 PM. Also, a soldier suffered injuries due to AP mine explosion occurred in the Nagarkovil area around 6.30 AM.

Sri Lanka Navy elites raided a makeshift camp located in the Iranattivu Islet on Aug 2. The 2 boats found in the Island were being used by the terrorists to collect ransoms from the fishermen

Navy found two barrels of diesel, medical items, and few tents in the Islet.
