Sri Lanka Navy Commandos of the Special Boat Squadron (SBS) today thwarted an LTTE infiltration bid to Northern Defence lines via sea route. Navy commandos using their small boats attacked at a small LTTE boat carrying two LTTE terrorists around 2 this morning.

According to the naval sources, the Fast Attack Craft (FACs) patrolling along the Point Pedro coast had made the initial detection of the suspicious boat that had been moving northwards, keeping very close distance to the beach. Alerted by the FACs the SBS commandos have intercepted the suspicious boat at a location 200m from the beach in the Manalkadu area.

The two occupants on the boat opened fire at the SBS boats that was approaching using a small machine gun, the sources added. The SBS commandos retaliated to the attack killing one of the LTTE cadres and the other had jumped to the sea and believed to have swum ashore.

Navy following the attack, have found the body of the slain LTTE cadre and also captured the small boat fitted with a eight horse power out board motor, a Global Positioning System , a hand phone , 40mm automatic grenade launcher, 14 grenades used for the launcher, 2 magazines of the machine gun , and a cyanide capsule.

Navy believes that the other LTTE cadre who swam ashore was killed by the Army around 3.30a.m on the PPD beach. Army has later found 5Kg claymore mine in the possession of the slain LTTE cadre.
