A
delegation of Parliamentarians of the United Kingdom arrived
at the Palaly Airport on the morning of 03 April 2008 and
were warmly welcomed by the Jaffna Commander Major General
G A Chandrasiri. The delegation consisted of Hon Andrew
George. (Lib, Dem) MP, Hon Stephen Hammond (Conservative)
MP and Hon Dr. Ashok Kumar (Labor) MP.
The
Jaffna Commander apprised the distinguished delegation of
the arrangements made to ensure the safety and security
of the civilian population and to maintain peace in the
area. He described at length the role played by the Army
in providing humanitarian services and essential services
for the civilian people. The delegation commended the civil
coordinating arrangements and humanitarian service in addition
to the security prouded to the civilian population. The
delegates put their signatures in the log book and commander
reciprocated by presenting a souvenir.
The
delegation eventually toured the peninsula and met with
the 51 Divisional Commander Major General LBR Mark who apprised
them with the current security situation. The delegation
then met with Mr. K Ganesh, Government Argent Jaffna and
gained first hand knowledge on the administrative matters.
Later they conferred with representatives of the civil society
and religious leaders. They left for Colombo in the afternoon.
