Put
pressure on Tigers, say Tamil politicos:
By
our political correspondent
Tamil
United Liberation Front (TULF) leader V. Anandasangaree
has urged the visiting British Parliamentary delegation
which is now on a fact-finding mission in the island to
be cautious of LTTE sympathisers in the United kingdom
and not to get carried away by their false propaganda
on the Lankan situation.
As
the leader of the newly formed Tamil National Democratic
Front (TNDF) comprising the TULF, PLOTE and the EPRLF
(Naba) Anandasangaree met the British Parliamentary delegation
along with PLOTE leader D. Sitharthan and the EPRLF (Naba)leader
K. Sritharan at the Cinnamon Grand Hotel, last week.
Commenting
on the discussion the Tamil National Democratic Front
had with the visiting five-member British Parliamentary
delegation, Anandasangaree told the Sunday Observer that
concerns were expressed on the issues with regard to human
rights violations in the island.
“On
behalf of the three Tamil party coalition TNDF, the human
rights violations committed by the LTTE were briefed to
the British MPs elaborately and the need for the British
Government’s involvement to put pressure on the
LTTE to stop its terror activities was also stressed during
the discussion.
Briefing
the British delegation on the political situation Anandasangaree
pointed out that a Federal system with a maximum devolution
of powers could be the only solution to the ethnic question.
“As
the LTTE activists are still active in the UK and in Europe
at large, the visiting British Members of Parliament were
urged by the Tamil National Democratic Front representatives
to be cautious over the malicious propaganda carried out
by LTTE sympathisers in the UK.
Human
rights violations are taking place in a big way in LTTE
held areas in the Wanni and innocent civilians are in
a helpless situation. Nobody questions the atrocities
committed by the LTTE. Therefore, the British Government
must bring pressure on the LTTE to give up its terror
activities to bring a durable political solution to the
Lankan national crisis,” Anandasangaree said.
The
British Parliamentary delegation also visited the Eastern
province and had witnessed the activities that had been
launched to restore democracy and peace in the region.
Some
of the delegation members also visited Jaffna and held
talks with the Commander of the Security Forces in Jaffna
and learnt the ground situation with regard to the security
operations in the North.
