Secretary
to the ministry of trade R.M.K Rathnayaka reiterates that
the government declared guaranteed price for rice comes
in to forces from yesterday. According to gazette notification,
the maximum retail price for a kilo of samba rice is 70
rupees. For a kilo of Naddu rice, the guaranteed price
is 65 rupees. The maximum retail prices for a kilo of
red and white Kakulu rice are 65 and 55 rupees respectively.
The
consumer authority requests the general public to inform
of any instances of selling rice above the guaranteed
price to the telephone number 011-2 321 696.
The
ministry says failure to display prices and making statements
to misguide the consumer are regarded as offences that
could be punished under the consumer protection act.
Commissioner
of co-operative development A.P.G Kithsiri says all cooperatives
sell rice according to the guaranteed prices declared
by the government.
President
of the Pettah and fort businessmen’s association
S.Sami says his association complies with the orders of
the government regarding the prices of rice.
