B. Nadesan, Head of the Political
Wing of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam in a letter
addressed to Norwegian International Development Minister
Erik Solheim asks him to urge the Royal Norwegian Government
to take steps to immediately end the military assault on
the Holy Madhu Church in Mannar District. The letter states
‘Sri Lankan State's year long, large scale military
onslaught’ is to occupy Vanni and the “ world
is also aware that the Sri Lankan State's military onslaughts
are targeting the historical Madhu church in the Mannar
district, the western region of Vanni.”
However, Security Forces point out that it was tiger terrorists
who have occupied the hallowed Madhu Church grounds for
years as a military base and using it as a shield to direct
attacks on the security forces. In an attack carried out
by terrorists recently the vestry and the buildings used
as lodgings of the priests were damaged they added.
Sri Lankan Security Forces are on the verge of surrounding
and entering into the Vanni District under the control of
tiger terrorists. Security Forces point out that the accusation
made by tiger terrorists that Security Forces are directing
attacks on Madhu Church is a blatant lie propagated by the
LTTE for additional political mileage and states that appeal
to save Madhu Church, venerated by Catholics and people
of other religions, is nothing but hypocrisy as the appeal
is made immediately after Minister Jeyaraj Fernandopulle,
a Catholic and Leader of a minority community was brutally
assassinated by tiger terrorists
